Take God’s promises seriously
Imagine you have to rename The Holy Bible. Give it an original name. What would you call it? I don’t even have to think very hard. I know what my choice will be. Definitely “God’s promises.” To me the Bible is 66 books full of promises.
For the next few days we will take a look at God’s
promises. The Bible starts off in the
early chapters with God’s promises: one
to Noah (Gen 9) that he would give a rainbow as a sign of his promise. Now turn to Genesis 12:1-3. Again a promise from God. This time to Abram that God still has
important plans for him. God is not
tightfisted with his promises. Three
chapters later (Gen 15) God gives Abram that amazing promise that his
descendants will be as many as the stars in the sky.
God’s promises are too many to count. Do you realise that what we refer to as the “Old
Testament” actually has a different
name? God’s “First Promise.” The first promise was that he would be a God
tot the Israelites. So in reality the
New Testament is God’s “Second Promise.”
The same promise, but now not only for the Israelites. Now for everyone who believes in Jesus
Christ. That’s us!
An now the crucial part ... Do you realise that those promises also apply
to yóú? When God says to Abraham in
Genesis 15:1, “Do not be afraid ... I am your shield,” God is also speaking to YOU.
